UPTOWN RENAISSANCE

          An art exhibition curated by Alexander Boyle, NY.

          Opening reception on May 5th from 6pm to 9pm, exhibition on display throughout week of the Post War and Contemporary Art auctions at Sothebys and Christies, until May 14th. A group show featuring the works of Damon Johnson, Federico Castelluccio, Scott Nickerson, the late Francis Kughler (1901-1970), Joseph Grippi (1924-2004) and Alvin Loving (1935-2005) as this show of New York masters celebrate the renewed vibrancy and cultural diversity of Manhattan.

           Mr. Federico Castelluccio is a classically trained realist artist from the School of Visual Arts in New York City, whose works have been acquired by numerous collectors, galleries and museums, such as the prestigious Yale University Art Gallery. Scott Nickerson also graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and continued his studies at the Art Students League and with nationally known portrait artist Nelson Shanks.

        One of the lead works for the show is by Damon Johnson, "NBA World Champions 1973," which depicts three members of the New York Knickerbockers, including Earl Monroe, Walt Frazier and Bill Bradley celebrating their triumph over the Los Angeles Lakers. Damon Johnson has been called the enfant terrible of "Urban Surrealism" and is a former Harlem resident.

Joseph Grippi was best known for his work as the publisher of Warhol's silkscreens, who took that Pop art form to painting in reverse on plexiglass. His close friend and Pop Art contemporary Alvin Loving was one of the first African American artists to be included in both the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
